Prednisone

A corticosteroid medication that is used to treat a range of severe allergies, multiple sclerosis (MS), asthma, skin conditions and arthritis. Prednisone works by reducing and/or preventing the tissue from responding to causes of inflammation, as well as modifying response to immune stimulation.

Method of Use

Prednisone should be taken orally with food. Take a missed dose as soon as you remember; if it is close to your scheduled dose, don’t take the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.

Storage

Prenidone should be stored at room temperature away from moisture, light and heat, as well as away from children and animals. Do not store in the bathroom.

Advise Notes

prednisone 20mgIf you are allergic to any ingredients that are in Prednisone, or you are suffering from a systemic fungal infection, or you are taking mifepristone, or any of the following, before you start a course of treatment, seek advice from your medical practitioner:

  • you are pregnant, are planning on becoming pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
  • you are taking prescription or non-prescription medication, any herbal preparations or dietary supplements.
  • you suffer from any allergies to medicines, foods or other substances.
  • you are due to receive a vaccination for a live virus vaccine (e.g. smallpox).
  • you suffer from an underactive thyroid, kidney or liver problem, diabetes or ulcerative colitis.
  • you suffer from a heart condition, esophagitis, gastritis, stomach perforation or obstruction, or an ulcer.
  • you have suffered from a mental health problem, such as depression.
  • you suffer from a eye-related herpes infection or other type of infection, or have recently had TB (tuberculosis) or tested positive for TB, measles or chickenpox.

Ask for medical advice prior to taking Prednisone if you are taking any of the following:

  • Barbiturates or rifampin – the effectiveness of Prednisone could decrease.
  • Clarithromycin azole anti-fungals, steroidal contraceptives or troleandomycin — side effects, such as weakness, confusion, muscle aches, joint pain or low blood pressure could occur.
  • Methotrexate or ritodrine – Prednisone side effects may increase.
  • Hydantoins, mifepristone or live vaccines – the effectiveness of Prednisone may decrease.
  • Anticoagulants or aspirin – Prednisone side effects may increase or decrease.

If you are taking Prednisone, tell your dentist or doctor before you receive any dental care, emergency care or surgery. Prednisone could result in higher blood pressure, water and salt retention, and an increase in potassium loss; a supplement may need to be taken. Prednisone could affect your blood sugar levels if you are a diabetic. Ensure you monitor your blood sugar levels closely and ask for medical advice if necessary.

Potential Side Effects

Get medical help immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Sleeping difficulties.
  • Dizziness or whirring motion.
  • An increase or decrease in appetite.
  • Excessive sweating.
  • Indigestion and stomach upsets.
  • Changes in behaviour, depression, a heightened feeling of well-being, mood swings, personality changes.
  • Nervousness and anxiety.
  • Excessive allergic reactions.
  • Difficulties in breathing, tightness in the chest.
  • Swelling of the mouth, tongue, lips or face, puffy face, swelling of the legs or feet.
  • Tarry, black stools.
  • Differences in menstrual periods.
  • Convulsions.
  • Fever, uncomfortable body temperature, severe sore throat, suffering from a cold.
  • Headache, increased eye pressure.
  • Joint/muscle pain and muscle weakness.
  • Severe nausea and vomiting.
  • Weight gain or loss.
